Description

A Fall classic, this spin on traditional apple crisp is tart and juicy with a hint of maple and a wonderful crunchy sweet topping.

Ingredients

Scale

For the filling:

  • 2.5 lbs apples (about 10), peeled and sliced
  • Squeeze of lemon juice
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup
  • 2 tbs corn starch
  • 2 tbs all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbs cinnamon

For the crunchy streusel topping:

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup sliced almonds
  • 1 cup sifted red fife flour
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup cold butter, cut into cubes
  • 1.5 tsp cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°C.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, add filling ingredients and mix well to combine.
  3. Pour apple mixture into a 10″ cast iron skillet or baking dish and set aside.
  4. In another mixing bowl, add all dry ingredients for topping and mix to combine.
  5. Add cubed butter and, using your hands, mix and squeeze everything together until small clumps form and there are little to no dry bits left.
  6. Top the apple mixture with the streusel, making sure to cover any holes or gaps. Be generous.
  7. Bake apple crisp for about 45 mins or until topping is golden and filling is bubbly.
  8. Serve warm on its own or with a heaping scoop of vanilla ice cream.
